A Green Haven Reimagined: The M Lhuillier Botanical Garden at De La Salle University

Blessing and Inauguration of M Lhuillier Botanical Garden at De la Salle University

Returning to De La Salle University after more than 15 years was a nostalgic and heartwarming experience. As an alumnus, stepping back onto campus brought back memories of my time as a student. But what made this visit even more special was seeing the stunning transformation of the university grounds with the addition of the M Lhuillier Botanical Garden. This beautifully curated green space has enhanced the landscape and created a serene sanctuary for students, faculty, and visitors alike.

Nestled in the heart of the Taft Avenue campus, the M Lhuillier Botanical Garden is a gift from Michael L. Lhuillier in honor of his father, Michel J. Lhuillier, an esteemed alumnus of De La Salle College High School (Class of 1959) and a Business Administration graduate (Class of 1964). Michel J. Lhuillier, a well-known advocate for sustainability, has made significant contributions to environmental stewardship, including the Cebu Safari. His passion for preserving nature is now reflected in this botanical garden, a symbol of his legacy at De La Salle University.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this project is the personal touch that Michael has infused into the garden. Many plants were sourced directly from his father's backyard in Cebu and transported to Manila to bring a slice of Cebu’s natural beauty to DLSU. The lush greenery, vibrant flora, and carefully curated landscapes now offer a peaceful retreat amid the bustling university environment.

Walking through the garden, I was struck by the thoughtfulness in its design. The diverse plant collection, including native and exotic species, creates a breathtaking display of colors and textures. A serene pond adds to the tranquility, while open spaces invite quiet reflection or casual conversations among students. More than just a picturesque spot, the garden is a living, breathing space designed to promote environmental awareness and appreciation.

Beyond its botanical wonders, the garden features significant architectural and cultural elements. The Amphitheater, set against a backdrop of greenery, serves as a venue for performances and university events. The Marian Quadrangle, with its elegant Corinthian columns and statue of the Blessed Virgin, exudes a sense of peace and reverence. The Brothers' Memorial Garden, honoring the De La Salle Christian Brothers, is seamlessly integrated into the landscape, with red anthuriums and mayana symbolizing both the Lhuillier family brand and Cebu Safari’s connection to nature.

Sustainability is at the core of this garden’s design. Drought-resistant plants ensure minimal maintenance while preserving the space’s beauty. Natural stone elements, such as the imposing Araal Stone and fine marble chips, create a seamless blend of tradition and modernity, linking La Salle’s heritage with sustainability efforts. Thoughtfully placed water features enhance the calming atmosphere, making this garden not just a visual delight but also a retreat for relaxation and mindfulness.

The realization of the M Lhuillier Botanical Garden would not have been possible without the dedication of De La Salle University’s leadership. Special recognition is due to Br. Bernard S. Oca FSC, President of DLSU; Dr. Robert C. Roleda, Provost; Ms. Kai Shan L. Fernandez, Vice President for Administration; and Mr. Edwin Theodoro C. Reyes, Executive Director for Advancement & Alumni Relations. Their collective efforts have brought to life a vision that will benefit generations of Lasallians to come.

For me, this garden represents more than just a new addition to the campus. It is a testament to the university’s commitment to sustainability, a bridge between past and present, and a place where students can find solace amidst their academic pursuits. Walking through the garden, I felt a renewed connection to my alma mater—one that reminded me of the importance of preserving nature, fostering growth, and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.

The M Lhuillier Botanical Garden is not just a space filled with plants; it is a symbol of resilience, legacy, and hope. It is a gift to the DLSU community, offering a place where memories will be made, inspiration will be found, and nature’s beauty will continue to thrive.
