Global Art Philippines x SM Aura: 2017 Students' Art Exhibition

Global Art Philippines 2017 Students' Art Exhibition

Last Sunday, June 04, 2017, Global Art Philippines held its 6th Students' Art Exhibition at the SM Aura Premier Atrium. The art exhibit has been a great venue to showcase the talent of the students, as well as for parents to see how well their children have progressed throughout the enrichment program. This event was in partnership with SM Aura as part of its year-long campaign -- ART IN AURA.

Art in Aura, launched last May 04, 2017, aims to redefine spaces with local art. Come and see the murals at the SM Aura Grand Staircase made by local artists Anina Rubio (who happens to be my college classmate, btw), Mercedes Olondriz, and Archie Oclos. Aside from visual arts, there'll be live musical performances, art workshops, local artisans and vendors every weekend at the Art in Aura's Courtyard Weekend Fair.
Artworks from Foundation Level Basic Level outputs

Global Art was established in 1999 by Mahair Goh in Malaysia to provide a venue for young learners to be creative and innovative through various art activities. Throughout the years, Global Art Programme has achieved awards and endorsements from several institutions and organizations. This programme has been implemented in 15 countries, including Philippines.

Learning art at a young age optimizes the child's brainpower to achieve full creative potentials, while enhancing emotional, social, and cognitive development. Here at Global Art, they have programmes designed for various ages:

  • Junior (age 3-4): Learning through play via a series of educational games, puzzles, songs, and art & craft activities
  • Foundation & Pre-Basic (age 5-6): Exploring art through a series of observational and technical drawings of simple themed subjects plus effective step by step coloring techniques using mixed media
  • Basic (age 7-9): Drawing story-based illustrations through object/animal themed subjects along with expansion of ideas, composition, drawing, and step by step coloring techniques and effects using dry media
  • Intermediate (age 10-12): Drawing and painting story-based illustrations through human themed subjects along with expansion of ideas, composition, drawing, and step by step coloring techniques and effects using mixed media
  • Advanced (age 13 & above): Engaging in a series of sketching, drawing, composition, and shading using water based medium coloring techniques and composition of poster based illustration projects
Additional programmes include Cartoon & Comic, Clay & Craft, Cultural, and Acrylic Painting.
The exhibit was filled with parents and students

During the exhibit, they had a Free Art Workshop which Rhyme and I gladly participated.
excited Mommy and Rhyme!

I am an arts and crafts lover ever since I was a child. I didn't get the chance to be enrolled in such programs as in Global Art, but I expressed it whenever we had projects in school, or when I had free time. I remember displaying my drawings on our walls when I was younger, and as I get older, I started making my own scrapbook, textured notebook covers, bookmarks, etc. And as much as possible, I make use of whatever material we had at home such as scratch papers, magazines, crayons, etc. Acrylic painting is totally new for me and Rhyme. But glad that the instructors from Global Art Philippines are patient enough to guide us.
Are you ready?

Acrylic painting is meant for ages 7 and above to better follow instructions. Rhyme, at 3, is actually too young for this but I've witnessed how the instructors are well-trained to handle children, how to keep their attention and make them engaged. Rhyme made use of small and big brushes, as well as his hands. For little ones, finger painting and the use of water color or poster paint are more advisable.

For my piece, I started by tracing the pattern to the canvas. Then I went for one petal after the other, as advised by the instructor, instead of completing one color at a time. A mix of orange and yellow was used on the inner and end parts, yellow in between while blending the two colors. Red was used for shadowing and defining the lines. Some white highlights added dimension. Black background to pop-up the colors. And wellah, it's done! I learned a lot from Teacher Gilbert and I'm excited to try painting on my own.
completing one petal at a time

I'm so proud of our first acrylic paintings, especially the one created by Rhyme. I think the session lasted for more than an hour but I hardly noticed it as we are both having fun and it's a totally new mother-and-son bonding experience for us.

Proud of his artwork

Here's a closer look at our creations. Not bad, eh?
