Ramen Kuroda: Ramen Teriyaki Pork Don Set and Kuro Chashumen

Ramen Kuroda

Alone and looking for a place to dine, I explored the Grand Canal Mall in McKinley Hill. This is just in front of my current office building. Although the mall is already open, and has unofficially became a selfie capital due to its grand canal and Venice-inspired landscape, there are still several restaurants to open and spaces to be occupied.

Going back to my wandering, the gloomy weather made me long for a bowl of ramen... Okay, cut it! I don't really need a gloomy weather to crave for ramen. I want it all the time even in summer. Then I remembered my first visit at Ramen Kuroda where I tried their Kuro Chashumen.

Kuro Chashumen (230Php)
The flavor of Ramen Kuroda's Classic Ramen. Featuring special garlic oil and a delicate tonkotsu broth created from a secret recipe, plus 300% chashu serving (versus Kuro Ramen at Php180). Enjoy the exquisite flavor of this dish, the pride of our restaurant.
Kuro Chashumen

Seeing that their ramen are priced relatively cheaper than other ramen places, I knew this is a place that I should try. One thing though, they only have 3 types of ramen (all tonkotsu base): kuro, shiro, and aka. So if you're looking for the shoyu (soy sauce), shio (salt), or miso base, they do not have it here.

The difference between the Ramen (Php180) and the Chashumen (Php230) version is just the number of chasu (pork) slices; the former has only one, while the latter has four. I chose Kuro Chashumen for that additional chashu slices and because I was enticed by its special garlic oil. Indeed, it was a very savory garlicky ramen. The flavor can be overwhelming especially when you've eaten up all the noodles and just trying to finish the broth.

Ramen Teriyaki Pork Don Set

On my second visit, I had the Ramen Teriyaki Pork Don Set, just for myself. You get to choose your ramen and this time, I had Aka Ramen.

Aka Ramen (180Php)
You will love the perfect amount of spiciness in this dish. Enjoy your fill of this piquant tonkotsu soup. You'll go crazy on the contrast of umami and spiciness
Aka Ramen

I was hesitant to try Aka Ramen as it looks scarily spicy. So I had to ask the waitress before deciding to have it as part of my ramen set. When I was told that it only has a mild level of spiciness, I went for it. And I loved it! I usually request for chili powder so I can add some "kick" to my ramen or noodles but this one just had it so right. It's an enjoyable kind of spicy that I can still taste the tonkotsu broth.

Teriyaki Pork Don (150Php)
Teriyaki Pork Don

Teriyaki Pork Don is also good. It's unusual for me to have pork teriyaki (chicken teriyaki is more common) but I like that it is sweet but not too sweet, has the right tenderness of pork, and there are plenty of meat for a rice bowl.

I cannot imagine how I managed to finish the whole rice bowl serving and the ramen (which actually is a huge serving). I think the set is recommended to be shared. The watermelon and mango dessert that is part of the set was just so refreshing and served as a palate cleanser. I was soooo filled after that dinner but it was enjoyable. Would definitely go back to Ramen Kuroda. Aside from ramen and rice bowls, they also have katsu, tempura, and sushi rolls.. meaning I still have a lot to try. Thankful for affordable ramen!!
